A Testament to James Ross Hunter's Legacy of Courage and Community

A Mother's Love Transforms Tragedy into Hope

On a day that should have been like any other, 31st May 2014 changed the Borough of Lewisham forever. James Ross Hunter, a young man whose life was tragically cut short, made the ultimate sacrifice whilst bravely defending another community member from a gang attack. His heroic actions saved a life, but cost him his own.

From this profound loss, James's mother, Collet Hunter, channelled her grief into purpose, founding the James Ross Hunter Youth Support CIC in memory of her beloved son. This organisation has become a beacon of hope, dedicated to promoting peace, love, and forgiveness whilst creating visual awareness platforms that connect and heal communities far beyond Lewisham's borders.

The Visual Awareness Monument: A Symbol of Unity

Ten years after the establishment of the James Ross Hunter Youth Support CIC, the community gathered for a momentous occasion. On a significant anniversary date, the Visual Awareness Monument was unveiled at St Stephen Church in the Borough of Lewisham, standing as a powerful symbol of the organisation's mission and James's enduring legacy.

This monument represents more than artโ€”it embodies the transformative power of love over hatred, forgiveness over revenge, and community unity over division. Designed with careful consideration by James's mother, every element of the monument serves as a visual reminder of the positive social values the organisation strives to instil in youths and communities.

A Community United in Remembrance

The unveiling ceremony on May 31st 2024 brought together a remarkable gathering of community leaders, law enforcement, and citizens, all united in honouring James's memory and supporting the organisation's mission:

Distinguished Attendees:

Metropolitan Police Leadership: Senior officers from the Met Police demonstrated their commitment to community partnership and youth engagement

Met Police Youth Cadets: Young people representing the positive path forward for youth in law enforcement

Met Police Choir: Providing moving musical tributes that touched the hearts of all present

The Mayor of Lewisham: Showing civic support for the organisation's vital community work

Community Advocates: Local leaders and volunteers who work tirelessly to make Lewisham safer and more united

Voices of Hope: Messages That Inspire

The ceremony featured powerful speeches and messages that highlighted the meaningful contributions the James Ross Hunter Youth Support organisation has made throughout the Borough of Lewisham. Speakers emphasised:

The importance of young people having positive role models and support systems

The power of community-led initiatives in preventing violence

The need for continued investment in youth programmes and community engagement

James's legacy as an example of selfless courage and community protection

The Met Police Choir's performance added a deeply emotional element to the proceedings, with songs chosen to reflect themes of remembrance, hope, and community healing.

Working in the community and schools brings fond memories, one of which was my years past journey as PTA president throughout my son's school years, the fundraising coordinator back then as well!  Life certainly has a way of going around in circles. The journey, struggle, joy and challenges.
I believe it's important that each child well-being take centre stage throughout my workshop which manifested from my journey here in London.

Healing from trauma takes forever it seems at times, but baby steps and support will get you through each second. My workshop delivery to young and old brings great satisfaction and an abundance of reward from within.  The smiles and attributes gain from the encounters brings great satisfaction and I am truly grateful for the opportunities to give back in all ways possible.

Thanks for joining me here I will try my very best to upload and update as I go along!!

I do have a few links I created to soften my doubtful moments.  After the loss of my son, I realise there was still an emptiness that needs addressing, I continue to write, I continue to pray and from those moments came all of the below, may you find some peace along your path too, easier said than done I know but do have a go...

Workshop model  by Collet Hunter:
WFC 'Waking moments, Following thorough and Closures'

I do believe using tools to enhanced realistic optimism will help with trauma recovery.  I created this simple model which I use up to this very day.  The journey began a very long time ago.
Every morning since my first born son was cut short I ask my self how am I feeling?  Then I set the day in motion to following through in feeling better with understanding acceptance and utilising tools to feel better.
(WFC model) is now a part of my life.
It helps me with acceptance and healing. This platform is now being delivered via workshops in schools and the local community reaches over 13000 individuals since its inception in 2015.  It stems from analysing and documenting my waking moments, following through and closures each day'.  From this also manifested a book which was not planned and an emotional workshop delivery.
"Let's change our days gently and practice what we feel with understanding.

Thanks for being here"

"It's been a busy year, some tears here, there and everywhere.
What keeps me going is the light and smiles in the eyes of young people, parents, and their loved ones, the bundle of babies held preciously in arms. The sound of laughter and conversations.... the visual presence of love that still lingers in this world even though controversies seem to be ongoing. This takes me to a conclusive point that it's okay to love and embrace love in return". cEb

#wellbeingtrails continues with the launch of #daisy4victimsuk connecting, supporting and sharing together.
Why the symbol of a daisy flower?  Remembering victims, the white for our angels, the yellow sunrise and sunset of memories and the green growth and ongoing pledge to keep visual awareness ongoing in our communities for the sake of our future generations.  Whilst we can't save everyone, we aim to keep the conversation ongoing.  I still believe one life saved is one generation saved.
